Important Notes
Arrive in Gangtok, the enchanting capital of Sikkim, cradled amidst verdant hills and framed by views of distant snow-covered peaks. After settling into your hotel, take some time to relax and acclimate to the fresh mountain air. In the evening, step out to explore MG Road, the vibrant pedestrian boulevard at the heart of Gangtok, lined with colorful shops, local eateries, and cozy cafes, offering a delightful glimpse into the town’s bustling culture.
Begin your day with an exhilarating drive through winding mountain roads to Tsomgo Lake, a stunning glacial lake situated at an altitude of 12,310 feet. Surrounded by snow in the winter and blooming alpine flowers in summer, the lake is steeped in local legend and spiritual significance. Continue onward to Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, a revered shrine dedicated to an Indian Army soldier believed to guard the region even after death. If permitted (subject to permits and weather), proceed to the Indo-China border at Nathu La Pass, a windswept frontier that once formed part of the historic Silk Route. Return to Gangtok by evening and visit the majestic Rumtek Monastery, a center of Tibetan Buddhism known for its golden stupa and intricate frescoes.
After breakfast, set off on a scenic drive to Pelling, a peaceful hill town famed for its unobstructed views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. En route, make a brief stop at Ravangla to admire the massive Buddha Park and its 130-foot statue of Shakyamuni Buddha set against a dramatic Himalayan backdrop. Upon arrival in Pelling, check into your hotel and unwind. Later, visit the sacred Khecheopalri Lake, believed to fulfill wishes and revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. The lake’s crystal-clear waters, encircled by thick forests and fluttering prayer flags, offer a moment of serenity and spiritual reflection.
Begin your day with a visit to the esteemed Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim, perched on a ridge and offering panoramic mountain views. Its intricate wooden sculptures and murals provide insight into Tibetan Buddhist art. A short hike through dense woods brings you to the ruins of Rabdentse, the ancient capital of Sikkim, where moss-covered walls and chortens stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era. Later, ascend to Sangachoeling Monastery, one of the oldest in the region, accessible via a forested trail and offering tranquil surroundings for quiet contemplation. Return to your hotel in the evening to relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.
Depart Pelling and journey towards Darjeeling, the Queen of the Hills, passing through picturesque valleys and tea-clad slopes. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and rest before heading out to explore two of the town’s iconic attractions. First, enjoy a nostalgic ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly known as the Toy Train, which weaves through tunnels and over bridges with scenic mountain views at every turn. Then, visit the Batasia Loop, a beautifully landscaped garden and spiral railway track that offers a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range and a war memorial dedicated to Gorkha soldiers.
Rise early for a memorable excursion to Tiger Hill, where, if weather permits, you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise that paints the snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga in hues of gold and rose. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of distant Mount Everest. En route back, stop at Ghoom Monastery, one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries in the region, housing a 15-foot statue of the Maitreya Buddha and rich with spiritual ambiance. Later, delve into the mountaineering legacy of the Himalayas at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, followed by a visit to the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, home to rare Himalayan fauna including snow leopards, red pandas, and Tibetan wolves. Spend the rest of the day exploring local markets or sipping Darjeeling tea at a hillside café.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the misty hills and tea-scented breezes of Darjeeling. Check out from your hotel and begin your onward journey with unforgettable memories of your Himalayan odyssey, where mountains met monasteries and every view told a story.
Great trip - Views and locations with hotels were great. Also, the driver provided was very humble and a very nice person.
Amazing experience of the Taj Mahal - The views were amazing even though we were disappointed that it was cloudy so we couldn’t view the sunset or the sunrise so maybe check your weather report before you... read more book. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and took the best pictures. My husband and I were very happy we booked the tour and would definitely recommend to others . Best way to see and learn about the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Baby Taj. However, be careful with the photographers in the Taj. The pictures taken of us were bad and we had to part with a 100USD. Other than this than left a sour taste, the tour itself and guide were first class ! Ek Number !
Does what it says on the tin - A very good tour of the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The breakfast at local hotel was lovely - I had paneer paratha and a masala omelette.
