Today is a spiritual deep dive into Ladakh’s monastic heritage. Visit Thiksey Monastery, often likened to Tibet’s Potala Palace, with its giant Maitreya Buddha statue and layered prayer halls. Continue to Hemis Monastery, hidden in a gorge and famed for its wealth and Hemis Festival. End your circuit at Shey Palace, the old capital, and admire its towering golden Buddha statue.

Drive to Nubra Valley via the legendary Khardung La Pass (18,380 ft), surrounded by snow-laden peaks and prayer-flag-draped milestones. Descend into a valley of contrasts—lush oases against barren mountains. Explore Diskit Monastery, home to a towering 32-meter statue of Buddha. Later, enjoy a camel safari across the sand dunes of Hunder, an ancient Silk Route town.

Rise early for a rugged yet scenic drive along the Shyok River route to the ethereal Pangong Lake. En route, pass remote villages and dramatic landscapes sculpted by wind and water. Upon arrival, behold Pangong Tso, an expansive high-altitude lake shared by India and China, famous for its crystalline waters that shift from blue to green to gold.
🛏️ Overnight at a lakeside camp near Pangong.
Enjoy a serene morning by the lakeshore before beginning the return drive to Leh via Chang La Pass (17,590 ft). Stop at Druk Padma Karpo School—immortalized as the “3 Idiots School”—and interact with the local environment.
